Martha Lane Fox is coming to town to promote the Race Online. What's that I hear you say well it's all about getting people online not some people having a virtual race using connect controllers.
Liverpool has an appalling record for the numnber of people who aren't online or have access to online resources on a daily basis. One of the reasons behind How Why DIY is to encourage people to get online and not be afraid of using technology. See the Liverpool Digital Inclusion Strategy Framework (google doc) for a real lack of ambition.
Martha is going to have a busy day on 1st November 2011 as she is first at the Liverpool Innovation Park talking about "How can business close the digital divide?" and then at FACT Liverpool for the Roy Stringer Lecture. You can probably still attend both if you are quick enough.
As part of the Abandon Normal Devices festival there will be a range of "Salons" at Leaf Cafe on Bold Street this weekend, covering Censorship, Fanatacism and Reality Management. So head down to LEAF or watch the Live Stream. Further details are below and you can head to the Ustream Website for a reminder.

This next meeting of Liverpool Cafe Scientifique will undoubtedly be very popular "Can hallucinogens and entactogens be good for your health?"
Under UK law, hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD and psilocybin (‘magic mushrooms) and entactogenic drugs such as MDMA (‘Ecstasy’) are illegal because they are deemed to have no therapeutic value and have, or are capable of having, harmful effects sufficient to constitute a social problem. Subsequently most information provided about drugs is negative in tone and concerns the dangers of use. Whilst it is clear that for some individuals and populations drug use has adverse outcomes, most drug users do not experience harm and even some of the most socially damaging drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, have legitimate medicinal uses.
Actors needed to participate in workshops in preparation for Williamson Tunnel’s Steampunk show, Dismembered Empire!
“In October the gates between Liverpool as we know it and a parallel Liverpool will open up, so we can witness a significant event in this world play out.
This is a Steampunk style parallel world, where Liverpool has become the centre for world trade and economic power. Certain infamous debate raging between two famous scientists, Tesla and Edison, has reached such significance it is ripping the ‘Empire’ in two. The Williamson Tunnels are a source of both work and power for the Empire's citizens. Strange and dangerous secrets lurk in the Tunnel's depths; those close to the truth must make a choice that will affect the lives of many.”
Experience of devised theatre and improvisation desirable, participants should be comfortable with interacting with an audience.
An opportunity to participate in site specific theatre at a unique historical venue!
Homotopia, the only lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans’ (LGBT) combined arts organisation in the north of England, has been awarded 3 year funding following a successful complaint to Arts Council England.
Liverpool based Homotopia applied to become a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) earlier this year along with over 1300 other arts organisations nationally. Only 695 applications were successful and 28 organisations complained – of these 28 only 3 complaints were upheld and reassessed. Homotopia, which was initially judged to be ineligible, was the only one of the 3 to have the original decision overturned and become a NPO with 3 year funding from 2012.
