Japanese residents, Liverpool’s creative communities and the CUC Liverpool are joining forces to hold a charity event ‘Smiles for Japan’ in response to the earthquake and tsunami disasters which severely hit Eastern Japan on 11 March. On Saturday 14 May 2011 at the CUC Liverpool, ‘Smiles for Japan’ presents a daytime family-friendly event followed by an evening music event, bringing cross-cultural creative activities and vibrant music & performances together to raise money and awareness of how we can support Japan in these difficult times.

The proceeds from the event will go to British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal.

  • Date: SATURDAY 14 May 2011. From 12pm noon to late.  Entry by donations.

Daytime activities (12 -5pm) include:
‘1000 Origami Crane Challenge’: Take part in creating 1000 cranes of hope
‘J-Jumble Sale’: Full of Japanese goodies available to buy 
‘Ganbare Tohoku’ Photo corner: Dress in Kimono & have your portrait taken to send your smile to Japan
The Print Aid Project: Local photographers-led international collaboration project in aid of Japan
‘Made for Japan’: UK artists’ works, prints, books, zines, craft objects for an art sale for Japan
-  ‘Donkey The Keiko’ – Vintage Kimono & handmade kimono craft stall
Performance/Demos/Music: China Pearl, Liverpool Kendo Club, Choirs and more
Craft Creative hourly screen printing workshops with ‘I heart Japan’ tote bag and art installation
- Art by Babie Sato
-  Creative Storytelling Workshop led by Tomoko Suzuki
Japanese film screenings: one for kids & one for youth/grownups
- Calligraphy, Badge-making, DJ, Food & Raffles

Early evening acoustic set (5 – 7pm):

Evening music & performance event (7:30 – 11pm):
Music: Man Get Out, Tibi and Her Cello, Mashemon
- Performance: John Gorman (ex-Scaffold), Tomoko Suzuki (Roxoko Theatre)

There is also a Smiles For Japan Launch event’ headlining Liverpool legend Ian McNabb with MashemonDave O'GradyJo Bywater at 3345 on Parr Street from 20:30 on Thursday 12th May, following Art Aid Auction at Studio2 Parr Street between 18 - 20:00.

    Liverpool Central Library will host a unique opportunity for visitors to meet artists who make ‘book art’ and to buy directly from them on 8 and 9 July.

    Founded by former Chairman of the Bluecoat Simon Ryder, the fair is now in its third year. Works for sale include cards and hand-crafted notebooks; limited editions of books of text and illustration; hand-made papers; and unique book sculptures. Prices range from around £5 into the hundreds.
