Social media Cafe iPhone app Social media Cafe Liverpool now has an official iPhone app.

Liverpool iPhone app developer John McKerrell has developed an iPhone app for Social Media Cafe Liverpool so that the content generated at the talks can be shared freely with you.

The pre app launch took place at Social Media Cafe Liverpool on the 10th February at the Arts and Design Academy, Duckinfield Street as part of John's presnetation on iPhone app development. The app was developed to help John with his presentation and as he describes it, it's a really basic app for finding out about the talks that have happened at Social Media Cafe. It provides links to the slides where possible as well as information and links to the speakers themselves.

mzl.gecvpgum.320x480-75John McKerrell said "I have made the app available as Open Source Software under the Artistic License 2.0. What this means is that anyone can go away and create apps based on my code. The main requirement is that if you do so then you can’t modify the source code to hide the fact that I was the original creator, but read the license for confirmation on the details."

Your editor and Social media Cafe organiser said "A basic app it maybe according to John's decription but for me this is fantastic news. What I like the most is that the code is there available for people to use, to adpate to create there own. Not being scared about how you create these things is important as it takes the magic out of it, which we really need to do with technology - demystifying it.  I'd even consider getting an iPhone just so I can use it."

You can read more about John McKerrell and his development of the Social Media Cafe Liverpool iPhone app on his blog Blog What I Made

Nearly forgot to add you can downlaod the app from here - iTunes store

Started in 2008 Social Media Cafe became an institution. Meeting regularly on the first Tuesday of the month, it ran for over 5 years bringing an eclectic and sometimes bizarre selection of topics to discuss. From emoji madness and a requiem for Ceefax to more grounded subjects. Through #smc_mcr, Manchester kicked off its open data journey and became a stopping off place for people passing through, who had projects and passions to share. Most importantly #smc_mcr was a place where anyone with a passion could pitch up and propose a topic that they wanted to share with others - either to inform or to find help. Because of this #smc_mcr developed an unConference format that allowed multiple subjects to be discussed at the same time.

Social Media cafe Liverpool are going to be wrapping up the year with a look into the future, where they assure us, we are going to be living next year.

Apart from the serious look at Walled Gardens and what our operating system says about us they'll be looking at how we'll be using more items in our homes connected to the internet, but not including the internet Fridge.

There'll also be a round up of Social Media highlights and lowlights this year and prizes for those who have "Rocked their World"  Along with Mice Pies and Mulled Wine.

Interesting video into the use of Mobile Ticketing by the London Symphony Orchestra, who along with Kodime (the digital Agency) and Salford University are testing mobile marketing and ticketing, allowing students to purchase discounted concert tickets through mobile apps. The apps will also use location data to show events nearby and allow students to share comments via social media. This is an Arts Council England funding project.

I can see there being more more use of this kind of individual organisational apps in the future, but the interesting bit is really when they start joining up and cross promoting events using each others apps.

  • New online network for Liverpool's creative sector New online network for Liverpool's creative sector

Liverpool's creative developement agency ACME are launching the brand new network in September. OK it has the same name as the old Liverpool network but we are promised something brand new and a bit more function than the old site, as it has been built from the ground up by Design Agency Splinter. I should know I helped with the user testing, so I hope they took my advice.

Yes, ACME has been busy reinventing this unique site that promotes Liverpool's creative community, and it will soon be ready for creatives to update their profile and portfolio, and re-connect with others and with your Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn accounts.
