ATBT2011A6webAbove the Beaten Track: Honky Tonk: A festival to celebrate the creative grass roots scene of Liverpool

This August, the fourth annual Above the Beaten Track returns to the Bluecoat to showcase the best of Liverpool’s cultural underground with an assortment of live music and DJs, live art, poetry and audio-visual extravaganzas.

The Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool
Saturday 27th August 2011
1.00pm to 9.00pm
FREE ENTRY

This year Above the Beaten Track is following a Honky Tonk theme with headliners Mike Badger & The Shady Trio - regulars at the SXSW showcase in Austin, Texas - performing with a trio of electric guitar, double bass and shuffling beats to recreate the classic sounds of Honky Tonk in a powerful set. The festival will still be in keeping with the musical policy of previous years, with folk, blues, singer songwriters and troubadours in addition to further embracing Americana, country and western.

To celebrate Liverpool’s creative grass root scene as the once described ‘Nashville of the North’ in the 1950’s, anyone can come by and experience live music and artistic spectaculars of entertainment through painting, photography and installation.

This relaxed urban-festival-like experience is taking place on the Saturday 27th August on the Bank Holiday weekend. No ticket is required and everyone is welcome.

  • Liverpool Acoustic will be hosting the Gallery Stage from 3.30pm to the finish at 9.00pm, presenting Jimmy Rae, Tom O'Rourke, Mark Byrne, Duncan Stuart, Jo Bywater, Stuart Todd, Jez Wing, Lizzie Nunnery, Thomas J Speight, The Orchestra, and headline act Stuart Anthony's Long Lost Band.
  • On the Gallery Stage from 1.30pm to 3.30pm See The Sound present Fieldhouse (Acoustic) and Anna Tai-Hogan, while Lazy Genius presents Supper-Cannes (acoustic) and Moguls (acoustic).
  • The main stage kicks off a 1.00pm with culturepool's 5th birthday party, featuring SJ Downes, Dave Owen, Tom George, The Trestles, Andy Steele, Kaya, and Mark Delaney.
  • Mellowtone take over the main stage at 4.20pm and run through to the end of the day at 9.00pm with Jeff Jepson, The Grande, The Big House, The Sixteen Tonnes, Dead Cities, Mike Badger and the Shady Trio, The Loose Moose String Band.
  • Throughout the day there will be DJs in the upstairs bar, and the Hub will be populated by TV Lux, Draw The Line, Stan Ambrose, and more.

Above the Beaten Track has combined with the Bluecoat’s Honky Tonk exhibition (22nd July- 18th September) to create a country and western aesthetic of humour and playfulness for this one day festival. Come and be enveloped by the traditional Honky Tonk theme of live music and dancing, food and drink, and an array of DIY entertainment, reflecting the fascinating “cowboy culture”.
