smclogowebLiverpool sees return of Cafe socialising for Social Media enthusiasts and novices alike.

Social Media Cafe Liverpool returns on 16th February, with an exciting evening of talks examining the rise of Facebook and the openness of geo-location platforms.

Past presentations have been from some of the countries leading Social Media thinkers, journalists and developers and February’s edition is no different, with the debut of Francis Irving from ScraperWiki who will be guiding us through Digital Nests and community building.

The presentations are followed by a Panel discussion and a Question and Answer session open to everyone to contribute to, with questions being taken from twitter and via the Live Video Stream using the Hastag #SMCLiv.

It will be an evening of examining the way that society uses Social Media, discussing its uses and examining its implications. It will promote a responsible and professional use of these digital tools, be that in our personal lives or in business.

But these are fun, free and informal evenings of discussion and socialising for everyone, with ample opportunity to network after the talks. So whether you are newly interested in the digital world, or are already a confirmed social media junky come and share your knowledge and experience, inspire and be inspiring.

Neil Morrin, co-Director at How Why DIY said “Social Media Cafe Liverpool is about creating an atmosphere that allows people to openly discuss social media and the digital developments that are changing our world. We’re really pleased to be able to reboot Social Media Cafe at a time when Social Media has become more important for us all, be that in seeking new business opportunities, new jobs or just in bargain hunting online. The two-screen phenomenon is here to stay and we should equip ourselves to deal with it.”

Started in 2008 Social Media Cafe became an institution. Meeting regularly on the first Tuesday of the month, it ran for over 5 years bringing an eclectic and sometimes bizarre selection of topics to discuss. From emoji madness and a requiem for Ceefax to more grounded subjects. Through #smc_mcr, Manchester kicked off its open data journey and became a stopping off place for people passing through, who had projects and passions to share. Most importantly #smc_mcr was a place where anyone with a passion could pitch up and propose a topic that they wanted to share with others - either to inform or to find help. Because of this #smc_mcr developed an unConference format that allowed multiple subjects to be discussed at the same time.

The Reader Organisation are looking for web workers to get involved in a project coming up at the end of January to help them promote reading to the people of Liveprool as part of an event called Impact48.

The Reader has high hopes for the weekend and is looking for volunteers who can build apps, develop a website for the Liverpool – City of Readers’ project and create a marketing campaign that uses social media to promote the project. One app which the Readers think would be great would be a reading tour of Liverpool linking stories, authors and events to a mobile app – but a key aspect of the weekend is to find new exciting ways to get the city reading using technology.
