Dr Kate Bennett will be talking on:
The Challenges of Successful Ageing.
We have all heard about the changes in our population which mean that there is an increasing proportion of older people. It has been estimated that 50% of the UK population will be over the age of 50 in the year 2020. At the beginning of the 20th century life expectancy for men was 46 years and for women 52 years. Now the life expectancy for men is 74 years and for women, 80 years. Both the proportions of older people and their life expectancy is likely to increase.
In the past there has been relatively little research on the psychology of older people. I am interested in the ways in which ageing impacts on health and wellbeing. I will talk about healthy ageing, about chronic illness and later life, and about the ways in which gender and marital status influence health as people age.
As usual the meeting is open to everyone and it's free.
