In the first half of the talk we will get an understanding of the theoretical definition of a computer based on the work of Alan Turing. We will look at the use of logic as a framework for formal reason and how logic can be used to make computers reason.
In the second half of the talk we will discuss whether reasoning is the same as thinking and consider what a computer would need to do before we would call them intelligent. What progress is being made in Artificial Intelligence to realise those capabilities? We will also discuss the philosophical debate over whether a machine could be intelligent, including looking at the Turing Test and the Chinese Room argument.
