At midnight on December 1 2009 the Winter Hill transmitter, located near Bolton, will be turned off and the analogue terrestrial television signal to Merseyside will disappear forever. For the final exhibition of the Bluecoat Display Centre’s 50th Anniversary year programme we wanted to reflect on the makers we have had a long relationship with as well as looking to new and young makers, which has been a criteria in the Display Centre’s exhibition policy for many years. With this in mind we have asked 5 of our established jewellers to exhibit and to each nominate an up-and-coming jeweller, whose work interests, inspires and excites them, to be part of the same exhibition. This new show features work by three established landscape painters: Simon Birtall, Joe Thompson and Roy Munday, all based in Merseyside, and explores the different approaches taken by each when representing the landscapes around them. Exhibition details
MUSIC: a.P.A.t.T. presents 'Terry Riley's In C'
40 musicians take over the Bluecoat for a building-wide, not-to-bemissed performance of Terry Riley’s mesmerising masterpiece, In C. United by a common tempo and responding to the collective polyrhythms pulsing through the building, the musicians make their way through Riley’s 53 musical ‘units’ as the audience creates its own route through this spellbinding performance. Bridget Riley: Flashback

Bridget Riley: Flashback is the first in a major new series of touring exhibitions from the Arts Council collection, Southbank Centre. Riley’s distinctive and optically vibrant paintings generate extraordinary sensations of movement, light and space. Eight large scale paintings will be on show, with four coming from Riley’s personal collection. Alongside these are around 30 drawings and studies that illuminate her working methods over her five-decade-long-career. Many of these will be exhibited for the first time.
