Go Penguins deadline for artists to submit their designs is Friday 4 September - check out www.artinliverpool.com for details of their SPECIAL artinliverpool Penguin - so they'll be calling for designs for that next week - probably the same deadline so artists need to work fast! There's an Urban Beach in Williamson Sq throughout August - good for the kids and there's the 'Alive After Five' events each Thursday including UrbanCanvas art on Bold St.
ROUNDUP
Ian's roundup - Slow Magic opened at the Bluecoat - excellent. Went to Slow Magic artist Vincent Falsetta's talk on the Saturday. Fab Collective at St Lukes also excellent - but closed now till 20 August due to unforeseen circumstances. Music on the Waterfront - good but they got soaked on the Friday. Well organised, good crowds and it is believed that The Star of Tennantspin John McGuirk sang. Ian missed Brouhaha parade but saw the Samba Parade (videos on youtube)
Exhibition of George Harrison memorabilia in St George's Hall until mid sept., really needs a permanent home like Lennon, McCartney. Revolver (not beatles related) at Bluecoat Barber Shop - curated by James Quin, 4 artists, separate shows. Canal Taxi and Swan Pedaloes at Bootle Canal at weekends, very nice but Taxi not always in service both from the Liverpool Biennial.
Also on the watefront we saw James May recording his Toy Story programme - building a Meccano bridge over the new canal extension and also we had a go on the new Yellow Boat cruise around the docks - run by the DuckMarine people. (videos on youtube)

EVENTS: Red Dot Recycling Week 2009
Arts organisation Red Dot are staging a recycling week in Liverpool for the second year running. The aim of the recycling week is to raise awareness of how recycling helps to reduce our impact on the environment and encourage individuals to recycle more and recycle better. VIEWING: The St.Helens Camera Club Annual Exhibition
The St.Helens Camera Club is one of the most highly respected photographic clubs within the region. EVENT: Art on the Waterfront
Art on the Waterfront, brought to you by Culture Liverpool in association with Walk the Plank as Creative Producer. Inspired by Tate Liverpool’s Colour Chart exhibition, join in the fun this weekend as the docks come alive with a family-friendly feast of creative activities, music, dance, interactive animations, colour themed street theatre and aquatic installations. As day turns to night, you can take a leisurely stroll to the Pier Head where the festivities are set to carry on.
OPEN DAY: Edge Hill Station
Open Day for the world’s oldest passenger railway station at Edge Hill. It is the first time in 25 years that the historic station buildings will have been opened in their entirety after a renovation programme that has taken over 9 months to complete. And METAL, the organisation behind the restoration, are inviting people who have memories of the station and its surrounding community to tell their stories and share their memories for an archive that is being created as a permanent record of life at the station and its surrounding area.
OPENS: Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition
A highly acclaimed, prestigious exhibition showcasing stunning wildlife images to coincide with Liverpool's 2009 Year of Environment, this exhibition will highlight some of the world's most endangered species. In Revolver, painter James Quin brings together four artists for whom painting remains a prime concern, for whom the notion that painting has had its day has not registered on their collective radar. Whilst all four artists concentrate on disparate painterly concerns and narratives, what they appear to have in common is a fascination with the materiality of paint and the modes of image making.
