Round up of the week

Just opened Arbores Laetae

Launching on 20.08.2008, exactly one month before the Biennial festival, Diller Scofidio + Renfro's Arbores Laetae playfully reinvents the tradition of the public park. The work transforms a brownfield site, situated on a key route into city centre, into a beautiful wooded space for contemplation.

Consisting of 17 vibrant hornbeam trees formally planted in a grid pattern, at the heart of this landscape three trees will slowly rotate. In place of the familiar movement of shade according to the rotation of the earth around the sun, here shade migrates at an artificial speed, transforming the familiar patterns of the natural world into artificial creations.

Opened last week is Bluecoat Display Centre - National Sculpture prize, a fruity show at View Two; Luli Barzman, Fruitopia and  at Ceri Hand Gallery, Doug Jones with Inservi Deo et Laetare till 11 September 2008

La Machine
5-7 September- The show will take place in the streets and public spaces of Liverpool over three days. You can come for an hour or stay for all three days. At the heart of the action is a gigantic mechanical creature - identity a closely-guarded secret - fifty feet high and weighing thirty tonnes. It is brought to Liverpool by François Delarozière, the designer of Royal de Luxe's Sultan's Elephant, which appeared in London in 2006. This time, though, Delarozière will be bringing his own sixty-strong company, La Machine, to work alongside twenty musicians and of course a huge crew of British technicians and stewards. www.lamachine.co.uk
