The contemporary art world is at times unfathomable and intangible. What makes a decorated dead bull sell for £10 million, while your most talented mate struggles to scrape a decent review and 50 squids? How do you get from art student, to art super star?
Many consider this apparent lottery to be directly related to the whims of Charles Saatchi, and in a way it is. The power of Saatchi’s wallet is undoubtedly a force with considerable influence, in the same way that Simon Cowell’s taste in music shapes what a large proportion of the population considers to be a decent tune. But the world of contemporary art is governed by a multitude of factors, all working co-dependently to support artists, gallerists, curators, critics, writers and an inexhaustible list of other interested individuals.

Making sense of this multifaceted phenomenon can seem daunting. As someone interested in contemporary art, how does one gain an understanding of the relationships between all these different factors? As an artist, where does one start? Where should one aim one’s arrows?
Talks on Art series 6 includes speakers who contribute to various realms of contemporary visual art, and who will provide an insight into the variety of ways artistic practice is developed and sustained. From academia to a commercial gallery, series 6 illustrates these different worlds via the individuals who work within them.

First in the series is
New York based artist Jason Simon - Tuesday 14 Oct
Jason's talk is entitled 'But wait, there's more (affective economies): sooner or later we will all end up in retail". While his own videos and installations have focused on consumerism, he was co-founder of the Orchard Gallery which entailed a group of artists and scholars opening a modest, temporary storefront in New York. Navigating between buying and selling will be the  subject of the talk.

Tuesday 28 Oct - Curator Sara-Jayne Parsons
Tuesday 11 Nov - Sociologist John Urry
Monday 24 Nov - Gallerist Ceri Hand
