Victorian gadgets

A new exhibition opened today at Croxteth Hall here in Liverpool, showing gadgets from the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

It’s on until the 23rd May, and you can get an idea of the sorts of
things on display at . The
teasmade looks excellent, I’m not quite sure when you’d use the skirt
lifter, and the clockwork burglar alarm is an interesting idea…
Eccentric Gadgets and Inventions

The Friends of Croxteth Hall and Country Park have kindly enabled us to stage this unusual exhibition of slightly weird, wacky and very inventive gadgets and gizmos dating mainly from the late Victorian and Edwardian period.

Between 1 April and 23 May, 150 items will be on display in various rooms as you follow the route taking in first the ‘Downstairs’ work areas for the many domestic servants who worked at the Hall, followed by the ‘Upstairs’ grand living areas for Lord Sefton, his family and guests.

The late Victorian and Edwardian era was a time of great ingenuity and inventions – many went on to be developed into items we would recognise even today, though many never really caught on and are now nothing more than curiosities. See if you can work out the use of some of the stranger items on display – or can you recognise the modern day equivalents of some of those really useful inventions?

Are you into Steampunk Then let us know what you think to the show or write us a review.

It’s my own personal history project stretching back to 2007 – with hundreds of recorded interviews, podcasts and plays. This section of the site is pretty old so don’t expect it to work all the time and ignore it asking for Real Player to be loaded.

So Listener beware!!!

Take you pick from a selection of Liverpool audio guides, its musical history, heritage tours, slavery remembrance tours, and Visit England’s official guide.
