Starting from the basics of laser cutting and operating a hobby laser cutter, this course will take you through preparing designs for cutting or engraving to making your own items.

  • Cutting, line engraving and fill engraving,

  • Using Inkscape to produce cut-files

  • Material choice

  • 2D to 3D, joining and jointing techniques.

  • Concentrated help and support for prototyping and refining your own designs

This course is much more in depth than the normal introduction I give to new users of DoES Liverpool’s laser cutter, so at the end of the day you should be proficient enough to come in and use a hobby laser cutter by your self.

I am currently the Technician-in-Residence at DoES Liverpool, a makerspace in the centre of Liverpool. I have been giving help and guidance to new and experienced laser users from all backgrounds; artists, engineers, designers and hobbyists. Technical knowledge is not required to start, it’s possible for anyone to learn to start laser cutting.

Is the cost of materials included?

n

Yes, plywood and acrylic will be available for you to cut and take home with you. However, if you have a different material in mind that you’d like to try out, bring it along.

Is there an age limit to enter the event?

n

While there is no minimum age limit, participants under 16 should be supervised by a parent or guardian. Because of the technical content of the course, it would be better suited to participants over 13 years old.

What should I bring to the event?

You will be designing on one computer and using a second to run the laser cutter, so you should bring a laptop to work on, which you can install programs on. A small number of computers may be available if you are not able to bring your own, please contact me if you need one.
