The UK’s largest Open Source & Open Culture event is taking place in Liverpool on 31st Oct. & 1st Nov. and they want your involvement.

n

Whether you have been before or not, Oggcamp is open to you, because it is the participants that make it happen in this community orientated geek celebration of open source and open culture.

n

Presented in Barcamp style, so bring your own talks or just listen to others. Pus a full hacking and hardware section of stalls and stands. Previous speakers include Stephen Fry and the whole event is FREE

Talks: A barcamp is runs like this – people come forward and suggest talks. They write them down and post them on a board. Then other people says whether or not they would wish to attend taht talk. If people do then the talk goes ahead, if not then it doesn’t. Sometimes the person who has suggested the talk facilitates the first part of it then it breaks down into more of a free for all Q & A session. The law of two feet applies as in if you attend a session and you have nothing to contribute then you can just get up and leave or if there is anther session you would like to attend get up half way through and go. In fact I have seen some sessions start being led by the person who suggested the talk and then they have wondered away as their work is done just by initiating the conversations.

n

So the Talks take place in a number of rooms dotted around the venue, each with a Projector and essential white wall. If there is a really popular talk then that takes place in the Main auditorium at the Art and Design Academy where Oggcamp2015 is taking place.

n

So prepare your talks in advance and suggest it on the day

In previous years we have seen flying drones, Open source Printing, Open Source Knitting!!! yes knitting. We have even seen one of the engineers from the Raspberry Pi foundation turn up and sell off a whole pile of stock.  Some of the big talks have come from the likes of Stephen Fry and my own personal favourite was Freaky Clown a penetration tester who gave an unrecorded talk in 2013. Unrecorded as he asked people not to identify him – well when you are walking into buildings to break into their server rooms you don’t want a picture of you up in the reception area.

n

Free Culture and a FREE Event

n

As in previous years, this year will see a dazzling array of contributions from across the UK but with a big contingent from the huge Liverpool maker community. No doubt there will be 3D printers galore, some flying drone and Raspberry Pi’s, Arduino’s, shrimps and other digital thingies I don’t even know the name of yet, plus the normal host of “give aways” as you would expect – well a geek doesn’t get all those stickers for his laptop from nowhere.

n

If you still have some doubts as to what this event is all about and who could blame you then watch the interactive documentary below.

n

Whichever your preference you can find Oggcamp on Lanyrd or Eventbrite

n

Oggcamp2015 takes place from 10am-5pm on 31st October and 1st November at the Art and Design Academy next door to the Catholic Cathedral.

n

You’re not a geek till you’ve been to Oggcamp so earn your stars

    So Listener beware!!!

Take you pick from a selection of Liverpool audio guides, its musical history, heritage tours, slavery remembrance tours, and Visit England’s official guide.
