SafeHouse Promo - Landscape TitleA creative studio based in the heart of Liverpool has revealed a glimpse of their latest large-scale animation project. Draw & Code have been commissioned to work on Safe House – an immersive theatre project that will tour the country during 2014. This first look at the forthcoming outdoor spectacular shows a vivid depiction of a fantasy scene that turns the everyday-world on its head.

Safe House will explore the relationship we have with our homes. Draw & Code have been entrusted with bringing the set to life by using projection-mapping techniques. This involves projecting animated sequences onto the performance environment to create effects that cannot be achieved with a purely physical set.

n

Draw & Code’s Andy Cooper is the lead artist responsible for both the animation within the show and the marketing artwork away from the stage; “This is one of the most ambitious performances we have contributed to,” he explains, “Combining traditional hand-drawn animation and sophisticated digital techniques will be a big challenge, especially on a 3D outdoor set.”

n

The outdoor show is currently in development by Metro Boulot Dodo; specialists in site-specific and multi-media theatre. They have enlisted the astonishing Wired Aerial Theatre Company, so expect to see the choreography and acting unfolding high above the audience. Event International will provide additional production.

n

Draw & Code have already worked with both Metro Boulot Dodo and Wired Aerial Theatre on a number of projects including the international outdoor theatre production As The World Tipped and most recently were commissioned to create a mesmerising backdrop to a theatrical fireworks show that commemorated The Gunpowder Plot.

n

The next step will be constructing a scale model of the set to allow the team to test ideas before the full-size version is complete. Look out for more updates on the progress of this unique theatrical event later in the year before it begins its tour with trips to London and Norwich already confirmed.
