Much of Liverpool: City of Radicals is still in the planning stages so you will have to check elsewhere for up to date details - but here is a line up of what is known now to be taking place throughout the year.

The new City of Radicals website www.cityofradicals.co.uk is coming soon but until then, here is a line up of events.

David Jacques: The Irlam House Bequest 
Installation by 2010 Liverpool Art Prize winner featuring series of drawings and painted silk banner in the style of a traditional British Trade Union, representing a banner workshop run by a collective of artists opposed to Victorian artisan and entrepreneur George Tutill, who monopolised production of union banners in the 19th Century.

Centenary of Robert Tressell’s death: wreath laying at former Liverpool Infirmary; ceremony at the Rice Lane cemetery; celebration event at the Town Hall; launch of large commissioned Tressell banner on Dale St, Liverpool city centre by David Jacques & schools banner project. LCC’s other Tressell plans include distributing copies of his Ragged Trousered Philanthopists; readings from the book at local libraries; and a Roscoe lecture

Albert Lipczinski 
Exhibition of Liverpool Polish émigré artist who exhibited in Post-Impressionist show in 1911. A political radical who painted portraits of union leaders Tom Mann & James Larkin and befriended Augustus John, Lipczinski’s story has been researched by David Bingham and is told in a forthcoming book and this exhibition.

Democratic Promenade 
This exhibition, curated specially for Liverpool City of Radicals, will draw on various ‘radical’ moments in Liverpool and Labour history whilst looking more broadly at ideas around democracy. Artists in discussion with the Bluecoat include David Jacques, Oliver Walker, Dave Sinclair and there will also be fascinating archive material.

    Liverpool Central Library will host a unique opportunity for visitors to meet artists who make ‘book art’ and to buy directly from them on 8 and 9 July.

    Founded by former Chairman of the Bluecoat Simon Ryder, the fair is now in its third year. Works for sale include cards and hand-crafted notebooks; limited editions of books of text and illustration; hand-made papers; and unique book sculptures. Prices range from around £5 into the hundreds.

    With Nesta anouncing that five arts and cultural projects will receive funding from the £7 million Digital R&D Fund for the Arts earlier this month - is it about time that we saw more of this money coming to the North West more speciaficaly Liverpool based arts and cultural organisations.  

    These R&D projects are testing the use of digital technologies to widen audience access and engagement in the arts, with the purpose of developing useful products, services and knowledge for the wider the arts and cultural sector so surely we could be applying for some of this money here.
