Liverpool digital news round up

Here is a quick round up of Liverpool Digital events and news that has come across my desk (my inbox) in the past couple of weeks.

Sea Level Research
All ships rise at the same rate as a friend of mine says every time I meet him and in the case of Sea Level Research that has certainly proved to be the case as they have made it the basis for their software which has recently seen them awarded £200K in funding from the North West fund for Venture Capital Fund.

Don't shoot me if I don't get this right but the software is a really simple notion that relies on measuring tidal flows in and out of ports, the data collected once run through the software can help predict the optimum time for large tankers to enter the docks to be unloaded. A simple solution that can save Millions in lost revenue for tanker owners shipping oil around the world.

Liverpool MakeFest on 25th June.
If you are a maker or a breaker or just have young kids where you want to get them out for the day and away from the Xbox this is an awesome event to get along to just as a visitor.

Spread across the floors of Liverpool Central Library will be workshops, games and stall concerning all things Makey!! Last year the place was a buzz of activity with drones, 3d printing, electronics, robots of all shapes and sizes, people in strange costumes, fuzzy felt, education materials, Apps, Podcasting, Arduino and Raspberry Pi stands and a little Live streaming from me. It was a brilliant day if a little hard work.
MakeFest itself have put out an early call for last year's Makers to get involved so you should have seen an email in your post box. And I am sure they will be widening it out soon to include newbies.

It's in the Liverpool Digital Events Calendar so look it up and when tickets become available I'm sure I'll promote them here or sign up for the newsletter.

Liverpool TEDx on 26th June

We're all familiar with the TED talks with millions and millions of views Worldwide for some of the most popular ones. In fact some of the people have become house hold names since. We all remember my old work colleague Ken Robinsons talk even if he didn't say "Hi" the last time he was here talking at TEDx Liverpool.

If you are looking for insight and inspiration into our existence on planet earth and we all are then apart from Ignite Liverpool TEDx Liverpool is the place to go. Around eight talks spread across the course of a few hours can really charge your mental batteries and make you long for greater things in life. It normally leaves me hoping to make it to the stage some day and not as the MC.

Well TEDx Liverpool is back and will be gracing the city with its presence on the 26th June and we've just been told early bird tickets are available right now. So you better get them while they are hot as the EVENT SELLS OUT!!!

Details available here

 Binary Festival

Just what the Digital Doctor ordered - Liverpool has long languished in the digital doldrums as far as large scale digital events go and if you're not that keen on heading down the M62 to Manchester for Future Everything then the Binary Festival will hopefully bring you closer to that digital nirvana.

Sitting alongside Sound City, Binary Festival takes place on the 24th and 25th May, they have a full day of speakers and events laid out on the 25th May and are keen to engage with the Liverpool digital community for events to be organised on the 24th May. If you have an idea, more importantly have an audience in mind then get in touch with them. http://binaryfestival.com/

Social Media Cafe - the Digital Liverpool event with the most misleading of names.

In days of old before IOT Meetups and Maker days, Binary festivals and the like there was only one event OK two events to go to but one of those was Social Media Cafe or #smcliv as it was rather obviously called.

As time went by the air went out of their balloon (well mostly mine) and it got harder to motivate myself to organise one. Well luckily for you it may well be on its way back with new people on board to help out and take some of the strain.

We've had one meeting so far and are going to look at those notes and act on them to see if YOU the real people in this story of informal education, knowledge sharing and collaboration are interested in it taking place again.

You can find out more on the SMC blog and if you want to catch up on the videos from old https://www.youtube.com/user/cafesocialmedia you can find them there.

The return of Jelly
Jelly Liverpool really is the place to go to if you are interested in getting out of the home/office for the day and meeting new people in a formalesque environment.

If you are a developer, a freelancer or just someone who works from home in the digital creative sector then Jelly could be just what you are looking for as it runs day long easy going work-ins. Guests come along with their laptops and smiles to work alongside each other for the day - there is free WiFi and coffee supplied.

Over the past few months these have been held at FACT Liverpool on Wood Street in their FACTLAB, a space where a couple of artists from South America have been holding digital workshops of all kinds to encourage people to get involved in coding projects.

If coding is not your thing you can still come along to Jelly as it is a brilliant place to just relax and meet people and if you have work to do and need to concentrate then everyone respects that also.
Keep an eye out for Jelly as they do move the venue around but it is normally held on a Thursday.

Jelly Liverpool's next pop up office is the 11th February. Details here

Studio Mashbo go to business.
The Liverpool business district will never be the same as Gareth from Studio Mashbo wanders the streets and Gyms of the Business district picking up clients. Studio Mashbo have moved from Henry Street to the Class A accommodation that is the Cotton Exchange and already they have started picking up clients in the building. After all, Gareth is the kind of bloke that goes to the Gym and brings back clients.

So be afraid, be very afraid.

Don't miss out on the next Creative Kitchen developers breakfast organised by Mashbo taking place on 3rd February

KTN Entrepreneur's Forum
This Wednesday evening 27th Jan you can if you so desire head along to Launch 22 for the entrepreneurs forum. Don't be confused with the Liverpool Start Up Group meet up as it's not the same.

This one focuses on Liverpool as a Smart City with speakers from the "It's Liverpool" app and Union Learn and Jim Noakes from Liverpool City Council.

You can find out more here but if you do then you will be missing Ignite Liverpool - the number one event in the city for makers, hackers, techies and digital nomads a much better event - says the clearly unbiased Editor.

In other news

App developer Apposing has now become part of Webtise after being acquired by them early this month. Find out more

You missed Plant pots and Robots this weekend, which took place at Liverpool Small Cinema and reports say it was excellent. Shame I missed it also.

And if you are reading this on Monday 25th Jan then Bill Gates is in Town.

It was intended that writing all this in one article would save me loads of time but I'm not too sure about that - hope you enjoy. Remember there are more events than this taking place regularly so check the Liverpool digital events calendar for these.

Plus there is probably stuff I have missed out so you can always let me know about that. Maybe I should enable comments on here.
