SciBar_Poster_AprilAt this next edition of SciBar in Liverpool, Dr Louise Dennis, Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Login and Computation Group at the University of Liverpool, will discuss the concept of reasoning in computers.

In the first half of the talk we will get an understanding of the theoretical definition of a computer based on the work of Alan Turing.  We will look at the use of logic as a framework for formal reason and how logic can be used to make computers reason.

In the second half of the talk we will discuss whether reasoning is the same as thinking and consider what a computer would need to do before we would call them intelligent.  What progress is being made in Artificial Intelligence to realise those capabilities?  We will also discuss the philosophical debate over whether a machine could be intelligent, including looking at the Turing Test and the Chinese Room argument.

Come along to SciBar on Tuesday 5th April and find out more.  As always the audience will be welcome to give their own opinions and ask questions.  Remember there's no such thing as a silly question at SciBar!
